Helping Annie
Annie is a 10 year old daughter of a veteran family who received services in Recovery Resource Council's Enduring Families Program. Both of her parents were in the Navy and her father had several combat deployments. Annie's mother has a history of drug and alcohol addiction and had been in and out of treatment in the past. Her parents reported many symptoms of anger, frequent medical issues such as headaches and stomach aches, which prevented her from going to school and increasing visits to the nurse's office when attending school The parents were at their wits end as to what to do until Annie's counselor encourage them to bring her to counseling.
In therapy at Recovery Resource Council, Annie learned about her emotions and how to express them. She learned how her thoughts, behaviors and feelings work together. She learned tools to manage her fear and anxiety, but most importantly she was able to finally tell her story and process the trauma she had experienced, which healped her understand it wasn't her fault. Annie wrote a narrative of her experiences and identified her feelings that culminated in a final family session where she read the story to her parents. The family was able to find closure and healing. Annie stated in her session with her parents, "I am better and my family has healed."
